Seed Saving...

For those of you who like to garden,  I would like to give you some tips on how to save the expense of purchasing new seeds every year.  Most people do not know that many different types of vegetable seed can be saved from each succeeding harvest, from year to year.

One example is that of squash seed.  Almost any kind of squash that you enjoy eating will work for this project.  First, let a couple of your squashes mature to the point where the vine starts to die off before picking.  Next, cut in half the entire squash to collect seeds, rinse seeds under water in a collander or strainer.  Then, spread these seeds out -either on a paper plate or some wax paper in order to dry them.  It can take anywhere from several days to an entire week to completely dry out.  Place seeds in a small envelope of your choosing.  Label them as to what they are.  And store in an air tight container or jar for your garden the following year.  Not only will this technique work for squash, but it will also work for other types of seed as well.  You are welcome to experiment for yourself to see what works best for you.

Anyone else who would like to give more seed saving advice, is welcome to comment....

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP NAME CHANGE...

Hello everyone,

The leaders of the CORN INDUSTRY have intruduced a proposal to change the name of High Fructose Corn Syrup to "Corn Sugar" ....This would not be a good situation because of the health issues related to this product. People might get confused and think it is a safe product when studies have demonstrated that there are correlations between High Fructose Corn Syrup consumption and OBESITY, DIABETES, and other health issues as well.

A National Consumer Watchdog groups has petitioned the FDA to stop this from happening.  Please learn more about this issue by clicking on the following link:

HOT CEREAL made from scratch...

Hello again,

In our previous post, we spoke about how one can grind their own grain in a simple Coffee Grinder...Now here is an easy recipe for cream-of-wheat, cream-of-oats, or even corn meal mush.
First, GRIND the grain of choice in your Coffee Grinder until it looks semi-fine....usually takes less than a minute.  Put one cup of ground grain to four cups of regular tap water in a pot big enough to hold it.  Then cook on medium/low heat until it has the consistency of thick oatmeal. Please make sure that you keep it stirred from the bottom...a little cooking spray around the inside of the pot before filling, is probably a good idea to keep it from sticking.  If it does not start to thicken up after a few minutes of hard boiling, then a small amount of extra ground grain needs to be added.  Then, one can use this thickened porridge just like it is with a little sugar and milk for breakfast...just like you would do for store-bought Cream of Wheat.  If you want to eat fried cornmeal mush, simply ladle out the thick mixture on to a skillet that has been greased with olive oil....fry until brown like you normally would.  Or,  if you would like battered chicken or fish, dip your chicken or fish in this cooked grain mixture before baking in the oven...you can add any seasonings you like, as you desire.  However, as you probably already know, you have to throw away of any extra batter that has had raw chicken or fish in it...unless you decide to boil it up again with more water added, and make it into a vegetable soup base.

These are many easy things that you can do with ground grain from a simple coffee grinder...

I welcome your comments and questions,

Grinding Grain, The Easy Way...

Hello everyone,

The subject that I would like to talk about today is that of GRINDING your own GRAIN.  Many people think that it is just too expensive to buy a grain grinder and too time consuming to use it, and they find themselves wasteing their money and resources on store-bought products.  However, the truth of the matter is that grinding your own grain for breads, hot cereal, and other foods simply couldn't be easier.  Most people do not know that a simple inexpensive electric Coffee Grinder works pretty much as well as any regular grain grinder.  And, cleanup is much easier too.  What we do is buy our grain whole and in bulk 25# or 50# bags, store it in airtight jars, and grind it as we need it....the same way that one would grind Coffee Beans -only our grinder is devoted to grain.  The flour that is the end result is usually a little more coarse than what some people are used to, but it makes delicious breads, hot cereals and other things.  It normally has the texture of cornmeal.  The recipes that can be used with this flour are endless.

If you like this post, please comment...and, if you would also like some recipes...we can give you some...free for the asking.

NEW USES for JUNK MAIL

Hello,

Do you hate the junk mail and advertisements that come in your mailbox??  I used to hate it too...but, not any more.  I save approximately .04 cents to .05 cents every time I repurpose and reuse the return envelopes sent by advertisers -you know...those ones with a clear window that are blank, that most people throw away.   I simply use a written on paper inside or outside to cover the blank plastic area with the address that I want to send it to.  Then I apply a stamp, and viola, I save by using it for mailing instead of a regular envelope.  One does have to be careful of barcoding -however.  It is best, that if your envelope has a barcode, to blot it out with a magic marker, or your mail may not get to where you want it to.  This may sound "cheap"...but, who was it that said, "a penny saved is a penny earned..."??  Benjamin Franklin, I think.

Do you have other uses for junk mail??   Please post them here in the comment section....or contact me, via email and I can post them for you.

Buying BULK GRAIN and other food products....

Hello,

I just wanted to tell everyone about a site where I buy some of our grocery items in bulk amounts.  For example, I buy whole grains like wheat from this website and grind it myself, using an old coffee grinder for bread-making.  I also buy large 25-50 lb bags of beans as well.  This saves our household quite a bit of money that we can use to put toward other things we need.  So, if any of you are interested, here is a link to the website...just click on the link and it should take you there.  You will be amazed at how inexpensive some of this food is.  I usually get the bags of whole grain and store them in washed/clean glass jars to keep them airtight.  One bag of grain usuallly takes at least 20 jars to store on our back shelf.  We then have a constant supply of grain for flour and cooking.

SEED SAVING

Hello everyone,

I have found a relatively inexpensive way to get seeds for the garden that I am planning for this coming spring.  When ever anyone buys produce or bags of cooking beans, most of the time people do not think of it as an opportunity to gain seeds for the garden.  For example, a large majority of the cooking beans that we buy in bags for soup will sprout if put in a jar of water for 24 hours, and then continually rinsed and drained once per day for several days.  The same is true for plain dry bagged popcorn, or any other grain that still has its hull on.  In order to test and see if they will sprout just try a couple of seeds in water -then you know that you have an inexpensive way to get garden seed.  And, the produce section is even better when it comes to winter squash and other types of vegetables.  The seeds are within and, all one needs to do is gather them before they go to cook the squash.  So, how do you process the seed??? Simply get a paper plate to lay the seeds on after they have been rinsed off from the squash, and let them air dry in a cool dark place.  You will find that a large majority of these seeds will sprout.  In addition, I have also found that old unused store-bought potatoes originally from the grocery section will sprout just as easily as seed potatoes specifically sold for planting.  Most of them will develop eyes for growth within a couple of months of having brought them home.  Do you need a method to store some seed after it dries??  I usually get some of my old used vitamin bottles to store them in.  They are really ideal for this because they are airtight and compact -and the labels can be easily written over with a marker to write the type of seed and the year gathered.  If you do try some of these ideas, they will save you money when preparing your garden for this coming year.  If you have any questions or comments, you are welcome to post them on this blog.

An Easy Inexpensive Way to get Rid of Bothersome Foot Callouses

Hello everyone,
Do you suffer from thick dry callouses on your tired feet in the wintertime??  Here is an easy way to deal with them -without having to go to the store for products to alleveate the situation.  Go get a piece of sandpaper that is for fine sanding, cut it in pieces that are big enough to use on your feet without being burdensome.  And, gently file away on the callouses.  YES, it may seem out of the ordinary.  YES, some of you may find it odd, but it WORKS.  Once you have used them, you will not want to go back to other methods.  Just please make sure that you stop rubbing once the callouses are gone.  There is no point in making your feet sore.  Then, liberally apply your household olive oil topically to the spot where the callouses once were.  Be generous with the olive oil, for it will hinder the return of the callouses.  Let the oil literally soak into your feet.  If you do not have olive oil on hand, mineral oil can be used for the same purpose.  By the way, this recipe also works for other types of callouses as well.

Do you have any other homespun ideas like this one?  I welcome your input...

Penny Collecting...

As some of you may know, I enjoy collecting pennies.

One of the things that many people do not know about pennies is that as of 1982, pennies are no longer made of copper.  They are zinc with copper-overlay.  This means that the only copper pennies that one will find are those which were minted in 1981 or before.  Copper has been going up in value lately, and with it, the monetary value of copper pennies.  As of 2010, Copper pennies were worth almost three cents each -more than twice the actual face value of regular copper penny currency.  The newer pennies are not worth nearly this much -because they are made of zinc.  Try searching this info out on the net, and you will find that what I am saying is true.  So, folks, if you want a poor man's INFLATION HEDGE, try collecting COPPER PENNIES.  They are still in circulation, and can be had at local banks as well as many other venues.  One just needs to take the time to search for them.  Happy Collecting!

Old Fashioned Remedies For DRY SKIN

Anyone want an old-fashioned cost effective remedy for DRY SKIN???

Try OLIVE OIL.  At night, right before bedtime, rub some olive oil into any dry skin area -including legs and arms -areas that are so prone to dryness in winter weather.  Olive Oil can also be used on hands and elbows as well.  Forget about buying expensive lotions and creams.  Olive Oil will beat all of them hands down.  And, if you do not like having to rub it into your skin because of your hands becoming too greasy from it, try using Olive Oil Cooking Spray.  One can spray it on, let it soak in, and rub off any excess with a dry cloth.  Olive oil also works for dry damaged hair and a dry scalp -the same way.  Save money and have healthier skin.
